About Black Stag Firewood
Black Stag Firewood was born from a simple belief: there had to be a better way.
My stepdad spent his entire working life in the firewood industry, so I've been around it for as long as I can remember. Over the years I saw the same experience repeated again and again — a load of wood tipped on a driveway, inconsistent quality, and customers left to do the hard work themselves. The industry had become focused on volume, not service.
After spending 14 years living in Japan with my wife, I came to appreciate just how much of a difference great customer service can make. Businesses there take enormous pride in the customer experience, no matter how simple the product. When we returned to New Zealand, I couldn't help but notice there was room for that same level of care and attention in many industries, including firewood.
That's why I started Black Stag.
Our goal isn't simply to sell firewood. It's to provide a firewood delivery experience that feels professional, reliable and respectful of your home. Every Stack is hand selected, neatly packed and delivered with care. Rather than leaving a pile of wood on your driveway, we use specialised equipment to place your Stack where it actually belongs — whether that's your garage, woodshed, carport or beside the house.
At least for now, you'll usually find me making the deliveries myself. I enjoy meeting customers, building relationships and making sure every delivery reflects the standards Black Stag was built on.

Where can you place my Stack?
Our specialised delivery equipment allows us to place your Stack in locations that traditional firewood deliveries often can't reach, including:
- Garages
- Woodsheds
- Carports
- Beside the house
To ensure safe access, we require a minimum clear access width of 1.7 metres.

Is the firewood ready to burn?
Yes.
All Black Stag firewood is properly seasoned before delivery and backed by our Ready To Burn Guarantee.
If your wood isn't ready to burn, we'll make it right.
What type of firewood do you supply?
We supply a mix of fast-burning woods like pine and macrocarpa, alongside slow-burning woods like gum, all seasoned for burn quality, heat output and reliability.
If you have a preference, just let us know when ordering and we'll do our best to accommodate. The exact mix may vary throughout the season, but our quality standards remain the same.
How big is a Stack?
Each Stack measures approximately:
- 1.6m high
- 0.85m wide
- 0.9m deep
Every Stack is built to a consistent standard, so you know exactly what you're receiving every time.
Do you deliver loose firewood?
No.
Every order is delivered neatly stacked inside a timber frame and placed where you want it.
That's part of the Black Stag experience.
What areas do you deliver to?
We currently deliver within approximately 20km of Hamilton.

What is the Stack deposit?
A refundable $20 deposit applies to each Stack.
The deposit is refunded when the timber frame is returned or exchanged during a future delivery.
How much firewood do I need?
As a guide:
Single Stack
Suitable for approximately 2–3 fires per week throughout winter.
Double Stack
Suitable for approximately 4–5 fires per week throughout winter.
Triple Stack
Suitable for daily fires throughout winter.

Do I need to be home for delivery?
Not necessarily.
As long as we have clear instructions on where you'd like your Stack placed and safe access is available, we can often complete the delivery while you're away.
